Access Your Health Information
The Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is committed to improve the quality of life for it’s citizens by promoting health and well-being, fostering self-sufficiency, and protecting vulnerable populations.
DHHS has made it easier to access your personal health information. Having access to your information can help you make more informed decisions about your health care.
Some healthcare decisions are easy, such as getting a cast if you break your arm. But other situations are more complicated. Does your medical history mean surgery might be risky? Can your caregiver share your complete health history with a new doctor?
By accessing your health claims information through a convenient app, you can:
-
Get control over your health claims information
-
Make it easy to share your health information with doctors, caregivers, or anyone you choose
-
Get help managing and improving your health through a wide range of apps and other computer-based services
The process is similar to loading apps to your device from an app store, such as the Apple App Store, Microsoft Store, or Google Play Store.
-
Find the app you want to use in this list of approved applications.
Example — OneRecord
-
Download the app.
-
Complete the registration process.
-
Follow the app's instructions to connect the app to your health plan.
-
Provide your consent to share your health information with the app.
-
Report any issues that might arise directly to the app.
As with any digital transaction, there is some risk. DHHS takes the security of your health data seriously. Your data will never be shared without your consent. DHHS guards your data by using authentication codes. This helps confirm that only you can access and share your data.
However, DHHS is not responsible for the security of your data after it is shared with a third-party app. Always read the privacy and security policies for any app you share your data with. This will help you to understand how your data will be used.
Make sure to guard your devices from threats such as theft, phishing, and hacking. Keep your device's security settings current. Only choose apps with clear privacy and security policies. You can choose whether to access your health data with an app. You can decide to revoke access at any time.
DHHS is committed to your health, and to helping you manage your own health. This new method to help you access your information is a federal government requirement. The federal government, the healthcare industry, and your health plan are working toward these goals:
-
Patient Access — Making sure patients are well informed about their own health and health care
-
Interoperability — Making it easier to share information between patients, doctors, caregivers, and other people and organizations working to improve and maintain your health
These goals and rules are covered by a federal law, the 21st Century Cures Act. This is the law that requires and allows DHHS to make your health information easier for you to access.
The first time you choose to share your data with an app, you must set up an account. You will need your name, date of birth, plan member ID, zip code, and a valid, unique email address. You will complete a process similar to the following example.
For answers to some common questions about third-party apps, see Third-Party Applications for Health Plan Members and Health Plan Members FAQs.
